Tools / Blog / How to crop a photo to a perfect square for a profile picture
Most social platforms display profile images in a circular or square frame, so starting with a true square avoids unwanted cropping. A balanced square also looks professional and keeps key features centered. Using a square from the start saves time when you upload.
Visit /image-crop/ to launch the Crop Image tool. Upload your photo, then choose the square aspect ratio. The interface lets you drag the corners or move the box to select the exact area you want.
Zoom in to see details and position the square so the eyes or logo are centered. Use the grid overlay to align key elements. If the original image is portrait, you may need to trim the top and bottom to keep the subject in focus.
When satisfied, click Export and choose PNG or JPEG. A 400 × 400 pixel file works well for most sites, but you can keep the original size for higher resolution. Upload the saved square image to your profile settings.
