Why do iPhone photos need converting at all?
HEIC is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11 — it's efficient but many non-Apple apps, printers and older software can't open it directly. JPG works everywhere.
Does this lose photo quality?
A small amount, same as any HEIC-to-JPG conversion, since JPG uses different compression. It's not noticeable at normal viewing sizes.
