Frequently asked questions

What deductions should I enter for the old regime?

Add up everything you'd actually claim: Section 80C (up to ₹1.5L), 80D health insurance, HRA exemption, home loan interest, and any other old-regime-only deductions. The new regime doesn't allow most of these, so it isn't asked for that side.

Does this include surcharge for very high incomes?

No — this covers the slab tax, standard deduction and Section 87A rebate only. Surcharge (applicable above ₹50 lakh) is not included in this estimate.

Why is the new regime the default now?

Since FY 2025-26, the new tax regime is the default — you have to actively opt for the old regime when filing if it works out better for you.
