Start with the year
The official Income Tax Department downloads page currently provides the common offline utility for filing AY 2026-27 returns. AY 2026-27 relates to financial year 2025-26 under the previous framework, so it is not the same as Tax Year 2026-27.
Check the official utility version
The current downloads page lists Common Offline Utility version 1.2.4 for ITR 1–4, with the latest version released on 2 September 2026. It also lists separate utilities and release dates for other return categories.
Confirm the correct ITR form
The department describes different eligibility boundaries for ITR 1, 2, 3 and 4. For example, ITR 3 is for individuals and HUFs with profits and gains from business or profession, while ITR 2 is for individuals and HUFs without business or professional income.
Keep Tax Year terminology straight
The Income-tax Act, 2025 discontinued the use of “assessment year” for the new regime and uses “Tax Year” from 1 April 2026 for income earned in FY 2026-27 and later. During the transition, AY 2026-27 filings continue under the old Act while compliance for Tax Year 2026-27 runs under the new Act.
Validate before submission
The department publishes schemas and validation documents alongside the utilities. Run the published validation checks after importing or entering your return data.
For income earned from 1 April 2026 onward, the Old vs New Tax Regime Calculator can provide a high-level comparison for Tax Year 2026-27; it is not a filing utility.
